What is dusty kleiss?

Dusty Kleiss was a dive bomber pilot in the United States Navy during World War II. He was known for his role in the Battle of Midway, where he distinguished himself by making a crucial bomb run on the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga. His accurate bombing helped sink three Japanese carriers and turn the tide of the battle in favor of the United States.

Kleiss flew a Dauntless dive bomber with Bombing Squadron 6 (VB-6) assigned to the USS Enterprise during the Battle of Midway. He also participated in other key battles in the Pacific theater, including the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Guadalcanal.

After the war, Kleiss continued to serve in the Navy and retired as a lieutenant commander in 1962. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 100. Dusty Kleiss's story was immortalized in the book "Never Call Me a Hero: A Legendary American Dive-Bomber Pilot Remembers the Battle of Midway" written by his son, Timothy and published in 2017. Kleiss' brave actions during World War II made him a highly respected and decorated veteran.
